Sustainable Health Approaches for Key Tribal Communities Health Interventions (SHAKTHI) Project

LEPRA Society, in partnership with the Azim Premji Foundation, is implementing a three-year SHAKTHI Project in August 2025 to strengthen primary healthcare in the Bakawand block of Bastar district, Chhattisgarh, a predominantly tribal area (67%) with a population of 175,000. Using a community-based approach, the project aims to improve access to preventive, early diagnosis, and treatment services for key communicable, vector-borne, and genetic blood diseases.

Where We Work

  • Bakawand Block, Bastar District, Chhattisgarh
  • Covers 114 villages and 93 Gram Panchayats.
  • Public health system support:
    a) 42 Sub-Centres
    b) 6 Primary Health Centres (PHCs)
    c) 1 Community Health Centre (CHC)

The project focuses on remote tribal communities, addressing gaps such as difficult terrain, dependence on traditional healers, poor hygiene practices, and limited ASHA support.

What We Do

  • Conduct awareness sessions on communicable, vector-borne, and genetic blood diseases
  • Screen populations for tuberculosis (TB), malaria, leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF), scabies, Japanese Encephalitis (JE), and sickle cell disease (SCD)
  • Provide necessary care and follow-up to ensure treatment adherence and successful outcomes
  • Build capacity of public health system staff for targeted disease management
  • Strengthen referral care systems at the Community Health Centre (CHC)
  • Engage community structures to improve preventive health practices and outcomes

  • Improved awareness and early detection of TB, malaria, leprosy, LF, scabies, JE, and SCD
  • Increased access to treatment and follow-up services for tribal communities
