Prison HIV Intervention

Under National AIDS Control Programme–V (NACP-V), LEPRA Society implements the Samagra project in Madhya Pradesh, with the goal of reducing new HIV infections by 80% by 2025–26. The project transitioned from Project Subhiksha in September 2024 and is supported by Madhya Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (MPSACS) and Alliance India to addresses high-risk health vulnerabilities among incarcerated populations.

Where We Work

Implemented across 131 prisons and 67 other closed settings in Madhya Pradesh.

What We Do

Conduct HIV screening and testing for inmates
Ensure linkage to ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) for all HIV-positive individuals
Provide integrated screening for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B & C, and TB
Implement Intensified Social and Behaviour Change Communication (ISHTH 2.0) campaigns
Organise Community-Based Screening (CBS) camps within prisons
Carry out wall-based IEC activities to raise awareness
Train prison health staff to strengthen in-house health services
Support continuity of ART care during transfers and after release

Key Achievements (2024–25)

2.05 lakh+ inmates screened for HIV (122% of target)
98% of HIV-positive inmates linked to ART
Integrated health screening conducted across multiple prisons
138 prison health staff trained
170+ PLHIV re-engaged after being lost to follow-up
