SAMARTH

A Mental Health Initiative for Persons Affected by Leprosy and Lymphatic Filariasis

People affected by leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF) often experience poor mental health due to stigma, disability, social isolation, and limited access to psychosocial support. Addressing mental well-being is critical to improving overall health and quality of life.

To respond to this need, LEPRA Society launched the SAMARTH Project in 2021 with support from Effect Hope (Canada) and LEPRA UK. SAMARTH is a community-based mental health initiative designed to strengthen self-care, psychosocial support, and community resilience among people affected by leprosy and LF.

Neglected Tropical Disease Resource Units

People affected by the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) like leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF) face multiple challenges, including worsening physical impairments, limited functional ability due to inadequate disability prevention and rehabilitation services, and social and economic marginalisation.

With the support of LEPRA UK, LEPRA Society has been addressing these challenges since 2008 through its Neglected Tropical Disease Resource Units (NTDRUs), reaching people across 143 districts in 11 states. The programme focuses on early diagnosis, integrated care, and long-term rehabilitation for individuals affected by leprosy and LF.

Embedded within government health systems, NTDRUs operate through a tiered network of care including 26 satellite clinics, 24 secondary referral centres, and 3 tertiary centres ensuring seamless continuity of care from community outreach to advanced treatment.

What We Do

NTDRUs provide comprehensive, people-centred care through a three-level approach:

Use of Technology

This integrated, tech-enabled model reinforces national NTD elimination goals while promoting sustainable, equitable care.
