ASPIRE

Alleviating the burden from Skin diseases of affected People to improve Inclusion, Restoration, and Empowerment

People affected by skin-related neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as leprosy, lymphatic filariasis (LF), scabies, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) often face delayed diagnosis, stigma, and limited access to quality care.

To address this challenge, LEPRA Society launched the ASPIRE Project in November 2022, with support from Effect Hope (Canada) and LEPRA UK. ASPIRE was designed as an integrated approach focused on early detection, clinical management, and community empowerment.

Where We Work

The ASPIRE project is implemented in Jamui District, Bihar, an endemic and underserved region with a high burden of skin NTDs.

What We Do

  • Community awareness campaigns to promote early symptom recognition, timely care-seeking, and stigma reduction
  • Active case finding to identify the true prevalence of skin NTDs across the district
  • Formation and strengthening of self-support groups for people affected by leprosy, LF, and scabies to promote home-based self-care and community-led vector control
  • Training of health workers to recognise skin NTDs early, provide appropriate treatment, and ensure timely referrals
  • Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) services, including care for severe complications, customised footwear, mental health support, and linkage with district hospitals
  • Coordination across health and non-health sectors for integrated and sustainable care

Key Achievements

  • Rapid Enquiry Survey conducted, screening over 1.2 million people , identifying more than 1,000 new cases.
  • Two MMDP (Morbidity Management Disease Prevention) units were established for continuous care and rehabilitation
  • 100+ healthcare workers trained on integrated skin NTD protocols
  • Monthly Skin NTD Days conducted at health facilities
  • 40 self-support groups formed for peer-led rehabilitation and social support
