Odisha Eye Care Programme

Advancing Inclusive and Accessible Eye Health

The Odisha Eye Care Programme is implemented across 13 districts of Odisha with the objective of reducing avoidable blindness by ensuring equitable access to quality eye care services. The programme follows a tiered service delivery model, comprising Mahanadi Netra Chikitsalaya, Junagarh Netra Chikitsalaya, a satellite centre in Jharsuguda, and the Urban Eye Health Project in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Through this integrated model, LEPRA Society delivers comprehensive and inclusive eye health services, reaching underserved and remote communities.

Where We Work

The Odisha Eye Care Programme is implemented across 13 districts of Odisha, with key service delivery facilities at:

  • Mahanadi Netra Chikitsalaya, Birmaharajpur, Sonepur
  • Mahanadi Netra Chikitsalaya, Junagarh, Kalahandi
  • Mahanadi Netra Chikitsalaya, Badmal, Jharsuguda

In addition, services are provided through Urban Eye Health Projects in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and outreach activities in remote and underserved areas

What We Do / Services Offered

  • Provide comprehensive eye care through a tiered healthcare model
  • Conduct outreach screening camps in remote and underserved areas
  • Perform suture-less cataract surgery (SICS & Phaco with foldable lenses) and other ocular surgeries
  • Deliver specialized eye care services, including:
    a) Glaucoma screening and treatment
    b) Retina and diabetic retinopathy services
    c) Low vision care and vision therapy
  • Offer computerized eye examinations, refraction, and spectacle services
  • Promote inclusive eye care for persons with disabilities
  • Ensure in-house support services (lab, pharmacy, spectacle and contact lens unit)
  • Build community and institutional capacity through training programmes (NBEMS–DNB, NCVRT) and ASHA training in primary and inclusive eye care

Impact & Outcomes

  • Over 90,000 individuals received eye care services (April 2024 – March 2025)
  • 12,283 cataract surgeries and 1,123 other ocular interventions performed
  • 10,000+ spectacles distributed
  • 40,000+ people screened through outreach activities
  • 713 other surgeries conducted in remote and hard-to-reach areas
  • Specialized services delivered to:
    a) 546 glaucoma patients (112 surgeries)
    b) 470 diabetic retinopathy patients
    c) 43 low vision patients
  • 396 persons with disabilities received inclusive eye care services
  • 25 ASHAs trained in primary and inclusive eye care to strengthening community-based eye health services
